Newark, Notts (The Ossington)
Another well-known view of this part of Newark. The Ossington building on the left is the former Ossington Coffee Palace, a Temperance movement establishment that originally came into existence in 1882 and that now houses both a restaurant and residential accommodation. In front of the tower and spire of the parish church (or at least seeming to be) is an early Georgian property (c.1725) that is currently occupied by Holden's, the Home Furnishers. 11, Castlegate was originally a residence (1735) owned by Samuel Sketchley, a brewer who became Mayor of Newark in 1791. By the late 19th century the property was owned by a local GP, Dr Kinmont, who it is assumed was responsible for a lot of the changes carried out to the house. In the late 1920s the house was converted into a garage and so many defacements were carried out that by the 1960s the property had lost a lot of its original grandeur. Holdens however, have done much to restore its dignity and now, because it is a shop, it is perfectly possible to see the inside of the premises too
