The remains of Carman House
The remains of Carman House
For context, and for the main description, see NS3778 : The site of Carman House.

There is now very little to see of the farm buildings themselves; however, what looks like a stone in the lower left quarter of the image is in fact part of the floor of these buildings; it is a cement slab with a regular pattern of stippling on it. The line of the southern wall of these buildings was also apparent nearby, with one of the stones of the wall visible in place.

The enclosures that were associated with the farmstead are now more conspicuous than the remains of the buildings themselves. There was a garden just to the north of the eastern end of the house: NS3778 : Carman House: dyke enclosing garden / NS3778 : Carman House: dyke enclosing garden.

The smaller enclosure, in turn, nestled within the south-eastern corner of a much larger enclosure, where horses used to be sold; see Link for details, and for views of that enclosure. (Both the larger and the smaller enclosure are depicted on the 1:25000 OS map, and on larger-scale mapping.)

The larger enclosure was itself just one part of a much more extensive field system associated with the farmstead of Carman. See Link for views of that field system, including its outlying parts.

NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry is in the distant background, on the left.
Carman House

A farmstead with a surrounding field system. See Link (in a Geograph article) for more information. In the early twentieth century the building was called Carman House; only faint traces of it now remain. See Link for an enclosure, just to the north of the ruined buildings, where horses used to be sold. See Link for the more extensive field system associated with the farmstead. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of the house's former site and its surroundings.
