NG5534 : All that is left of the kilns

taken 12 years ago, near to Inverarish, Isle of Raasay, Scotland

All that is left of the kilns
All that is left of the kilns
Looking rather like a row of cottages, these were once the cores of a row of five calcining kilns used to treat the iron ore mined on Raasay before it was shipped out to the blast furnaces of Gartcosh Iron Works in Lanarkshire, there to become pig iron. The kilns took the form of vertical cylinders, each around 30 metres tall, containing and rising above these buildings.
