Dob's Linn
Dob's Linn
This flat-topped boulder by the burn in Dobís Linn is a favourite spot to split open shale samples in the search for graptolite fossils. The geologist Charles Lapworth visited this spectacular small gorge in the 19th century and his discovery and study of the graptolite fossils here led to the unravelling of the stratigraphy and structure of the Southern Uplands. Lapworth stayed at the nearby Birkhill Cottage between 1872 and 1877 where a commemorative plaque was erected in 1931. For a view of the cottage, see NT2015 : The A708 at Birkhill and for a view of the plaque, see NT2015 : The Charles Lapworth plaque at Birkhill Cottage.
