Weathered sandstone carving, Belfast
Sandstone might be a good material for carvers but it’s not particularly good at withstanding the effects of the elements. This example is on the Ocean Buildings (also the “Oceanic” and the “Pearl”) J3374 : Ocean Buildings, Belfast (detail) (1) and J3374 : Ocean Buildings, Belfast (detail) (2) at the corner of Donegall Square East and Patterson’s Place. J3649 : Church datestone, The Spa, Ballynahinch shows an older, and much less weathered, example from 1872.
