Switch house building, Fawley Power Station
Switch house building, Fawley Power Station
On the right is the huge switch-house on the Fawley Power Station site. The energy output of the oil-fired power station is sent here on its way to the National Grid. The voltage is stepped up by transformers outside the main building, then the electrical energy is sent by underground cable to the switchgear inside this building. I assume the switchgear here is enclosed to give it protection from the wet maritime environment. The smaller concrete building on the left contains another transformer for the submarine cables that cross Southampton Water (to the left) and emerge in SU5004.
