The Burren - Junction of R476 & R480 - Lemenagh Castle
View is to north from R476 just east of junction with R480. The castle is off R480 just north of the junction with R476. This fortified mansion was built by Conor O'Brien in early 1600s. It incorporated a tower house previously built by O'Briens. Today it is nothing more than a ghostly shell. There is an interesting story about how Conor's wife Maire Rua (Red Mary) MacMahon managed to retain possession of the property after her husband died and Cromwell visited the site. Later on, a fireplace was removed and relocated, on loan, to Old Ground Hotel in Ennis where it is presently being used.
