LNWR warehouse, Heaton Norris - hydraulic plumbing
This large railway warehouse had its own hydraulic power system with an accumulator to maintain system pressure and provide some storage of energy. The main pipe pressurising the system comes out of the bottom of the accumulator and passes to the left. The accumulator weight casing is on the right and is obviously in its lowest position (as the system has been out of use for years). The thinner pipe comes from the pressure pumps and tops up the system. The valve controls the inflow of water and is shut off when the accumulator is at the top of its safe travel. A typical power system preesure is 750 psi but some ran as high as 1150 psi. This is an unusual view as not many people are interested in hydraulic systems to this degree and there aren't all that many that can be seen.
