The remains of Wardhouse
The remains of Wardhouse
The farm buildings of Wardhouse were arranged in an L-shape. Their ruins are still discernible, although they now lie just within some woods (NS4660 : The edge of the woods). One arm of the "L" runs from left to right in the foreground, and the other arm is apparent as a ridge receding from near the lower-right corner of the image.

Stone rubble is still visible on the site; for example, the sapling in the left foreground is growing in a pit containing such rubble. Even on the first-edition OS map, surveyed in 1858, the site was annotated "Wardhouse (ruin)", so it is little wonder that the remains are in poor condition.

[See NS4560 : The remains of Stanelymoor for a discussion of other vanished farmsteads in the area.]

Traces of a field system associated with the farmstead can still be seen, both inside and outside the woods. Click on the end-note title to see these.
Wardhouse field system

By 1858, when this area was surveyed for the first-edition OS map, the farmstead of Wardhouse was already a ruin. However, the L-shaped ruins of the farm buildings can still be discerned, as can various parts of a field system associated with the farmstead.
