Remains of Wardhouse field system
The farm buildings, which were already in ruins by the 1860s, were located in the woods to the left: NS4660 : The remains of Wardhouse.

The present photograph shows part of the associated field system: a low ridge runs from left to right in the foreground. It then makes a sharp turn (beside the gorse bush), to recede from the photographer's position (after only 20 metres or so it begins to curve left, and then enters the woods, but this is not apparent in the photograph).

Wardhouse field system

By 1858, when this area was surveyed for the first-edition OS map, the farmstead of Wardhouse was already a ruin. However, the L-shaped ruins of the farm buildings can still be discerned, as can various parts of a field system associated with the farmstead.
