SK2273 : Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara)

taken 8 years ago, near to Hassop, Derbyshire, Great Britain

Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara)
Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipara)
One of two lizards we saw on Hassop Common, basking on warm rocks in the sunshine. This one appears to be a pregnant female. Common lizards give birth to live young, as opposed to laying eggs, hence the species' alternative name of Viviparous Lizard (and scientific name Zootoca vivipara).
