Above Back Dale Mine
Above Back Dale Mine
The public footpath shown to the south of this point through Back Dale Wood has been diverted northwards while quarrying takes place. Signage is inadequate and it took us a while (and a few false starts) to work out where we, walking east, were supposed to go: follow the track uphill (in the opposite direction to this photo) and join up with the main High Rake byway beyond the old opencast mine. The Back Dale Wood footpath has been completely obliterated, at least temporarily - it would be nice if quarrying companies, having been granted permission to destroy a public footpath, could be bothered to signpost diversions properly.
