Clifton Downs Rd Area - BS8
The Grade II* listed 19th century Christ Church with its five-stage tower and broach spire. It faces Clifton Downs Road and is sandwiched between Christchurch Road (on the right) and Clifton Park beyond it. The main part of the church was designed by Charles Dyer and completed in by 1841, with aisles by William C. Basset-Smith in 1885. John Norton was responsible for the landmark steeple in 1859 bringing the overall height of the building to 65 metres (213 ft). In addition, the 1841 Pennant stone steps and the wrought-iron fleur-de-lys quadrant railings - linked by an overthrow arch above the steps that lead up to the main entrance doors - are also Grade II-listed. It is said that Agatha Christie, the writer married one of her two husbands in this church.
