Without the suspension bridge tower, the observatory and the distant spire of Christ Church, Clifton this was probably the view that the tribespeople of Stokeleigh Camp, the Iron Age hill fort on the Leigh Woods side of the gorge (c.350BC), would have looked out on to. Presumably though the cave in the rock face below the observatory – later named St Vincent’s Cave – would have been visible?
