Mulberry harbours, off Castletown, Portland
Mulberry harbours, off Castletown, Portland
Two of these huge concrete 'Phoenix' caissons - devised for the D-Day landings of 1944 - have somehow come to rest here, in Portland Harbour. Shot taken from Castletown Slipway, not many yards west of the dockyard gates - beyond which there is no routine public access.

A further example is to be found off Shoeburyness, in the Thames Estuary: Link
