NG3648 : Ruined shieling hut

taken 7 years ago, 3 km from Blackhill, Highland, Great Britain

Ruined shieling hut
Ruined shieling hut
This is the best preserved of a group of about six similar structures just here. It is a little larger than most shieling hut ruins found locally, and a little unusual in having square corners - as most are rounded. But the size, grouping and location of the ruins make it more than likely that they were shielings. The huts were used by shepherds when they brought their sheep onto higher ground during the summer.
