Egglestone Abbey: nave, crossing and east end
Egglestone Abbey was a house of Premonstratensian Canons. This order was subject to a discipline and austerity similar to that of the Cistercian monks, but being made up of secular canons undertook preaching and pastoral work in the local community rather than isolating themselves. This particular abbey was poorly-endowed and in financial straits for much of its existence, coming close on occasions to being reduced to priory status.
In the crossing, the tomb of Sir Ralph Bowes.
An unattributed tinted postcard of the abbey from this very angle, stamp marked August 1906, shows that hardly any change has taken place in the ruined masonry, but two substantial trees (then growing dangerously close) appear to have been removed at some stage.
