R8127 : Moor Abbey

taken 13 years ago, near to Galbally, Co Limerick, Ireland

Moor Abbey
Moor Abbey
Founded by the Franciscans in the 13th century on the banks of the Aherlow river, the present building (technically a Friary, not an Abbey) probably dates back to 1471. Shortly after being built, for reasons not known, the abbey burnt but was quickly restored and flourished for the next century.
