ST2825 : Coalharbour bridge

taken 13 years ago, near to Ham, Somerset, England

Coalharbour bridge.
Coalharbour bridge.
This private suspension bridge was built by the Royal marines in 1968 and opened by Lady Talbot, Joyce Gertrude Linley who died in 1981. It crosses the River Tone just east of Ham. Why would the Marines build a private bridge? No doubt it had something to do with the fact that Lady Talbot was married to Vice-Admiral Sir Fitzroy Talbot of Thickthorn Manor, Ilminster, Somerset, who fought in the second world war and held many high positions in the navy including Commanding Officer, Plymouth. He died in 1998.
