The Sunken Garden, Priory Park
The Sunken Garden was laid out around an ornamental pond between 1878 and 1885. The garden was central to a series of improvements to the estate instigated by Lady Henry Somerset when she became owner on the death of her father in 1883.
Beyond is Reigate Priory. The Priory was originally founded in the early 13th century and later converted to a mansion in Tudor times following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In 1541, Henry VIII granted the Manor and Priory of Reigate to Lord William Howard, uncle of Henry's fifth wife, Catherine Howard. The Grade I listed Priory now houses both Reigate Priory School and Reigate Priory Museum.
