Carlton station (remains), 1988
View SW, towards Wrangbrook Junction, Cudworth etc.: ex-Hull & Barnsley Railway Hull - Cudworth/Denaby/Wath line. The latter-day (1885 - 1902) H&B system was built primarily to carry coal from South Yorkshire mines to Hull. Carlton (originally Carlton Towers) station was closed to passengers when services were withdrawn west of South Howden as early as 1/1/32 and to goods from 6/4/59, but mineral traffic continued to pass through until the line closed completely from 7/8/67. The line here is in use because in 1972 the section from Hensall to Drax was restored for use by Merry-Go-Round coal trains serving Drax Power Station.
