Caerphilly Castle, Outer Wall and Moat
Caerphilly Castle, Outer Wall and Moat
Caerphilly is the largest castle in Wales and the second biggest in Britain (after Windsor), covering an area of 30 acres including its extensive lake defences. It was begun in 1268 by Gilbert de Clare but was never completely finished in his lifetime and from the 15th century it was allowed to slowly decay. Much of what we see standing today is the result of restoration work carried out in the 1930s. The lakes were restored in 1958.
