Ruined Barns, Balsdean
These farm buildings were erected after the Second World War to replace Balsdean Farm that had been evacuated at the start of the war then used for target practice during the rest. That farm had been a remnant of the medieval hamlet of Balsdean that had been reduced to the former manor house, from which the farm operated, and a couple of farm labourers cottages by the 1930s. The only link was via a rough track with Rottingdean a couple of miles away. The farm was located in the valley to the left of the current buildings. Out of shot to the right was TQ3706 : Site of Norton Farm though that had been vacant for a number of years before the war. The old course of the track north to Balsdean Bottom can be seen as a sunken lane the current course of the bridleway is a little to the north.
