SD9499 : Site of crushing mill, Gunnerside Gill

taken 13 years ago, near to Ivelet, North Yorkshire, England

Site of crushing mill, Gunnerside Gill
Gunnerside was a major location for lead mining.
The foreground site is that of a crushing plant where lead ore extracted from the mine was crushed and then 'washed' to remove the waste rock. The finely divided material is that waste rock which was dumped at the site. Between the trees in the centre of the image, bouseteams can be discerned and distantly, above the right side of the wall is the Sir Francis Mine.
