Gernon Bushes
This Essex Wildlife Trust site is the last remnant of the old Coopersale Common that once linked Epping Lower Forest along the hill ridge to Ongar Park.
The woodland consists of birch, immature Oak and many old hornbeam pollards and was originally common wood pasture used by cattle, pigs and deer.
Coopersale common is in the Civil Parish of Theydon Garnon; the names "Gernon" and "Garnon" are alternate spellings of the old family name family of Gernon, who held the capital manor from the 13th century. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the parish was known also as Coopersale.
