Wrought-ironwork at Ham House (3)
Wrought-ironwork at Ham House (3)
One of the curly wrought-iron members which buttress the gate-posts. A straight length of girder would serve just as well, but that was not the 18th century approach. (I'm assuming that the iron-work is later than the house itself - but my comment would hold true for earlier centuries). In particular, I am impressed by the neat way in which the blacksmith has tapered off the 'tails' of his iron bar, before going on to bend it to shape.
