The Border line on Stob Rig
The Border line on Stob Rig
The Anglo-Scottish Border at this location follows the wall due south towards Whitelaw Nick (on the skyline). It is followed on the Scottish side by the Pennine Way (high level route). This part of the ridge was formerly known by the name, White Swire (or 'Swyre', denoting a neck of land). It provided a Border crossing between Yetholm (via Halter Burn) and the College Valley (via the track to Trowupburn), much used by the Border Reivers in the C16th.

The Ordnance Survey failed to record the old name, thereby losing a continuity of the former importance of this location. They did, however, record Humbleton Swyre just to the north, below Coldsmouth Hill.

Eric Robson in The Border Line (2006) points out the straightness of the Border fence along this stretch (apart from a right-angled kink at one point ahead). It certainly has the look of an arbitrated line, and quite a late one at that as its appearance on the OS map of 1899 shows it dividing part of the land of Yetholm Common previously claimed by Scotland (or at least the Yetholm gypsies). The Border shown on the 1862 map, used the Stob Stones NT8527 : Stob Stones and an old March ditch to its north, to define the line, now both bypassed by the new fence, and firmly in Scotland.
