The original war memorial SP1291 : War memorial by St Mary's church, Pype Hayes B24 had no room for any more names. This polished black granite obelisk was erected for the millennium, opposite the west front of the 1930s St Mary's church. The inscription at the base of the left-hand face of the memorial reads:
"We name before God,
These from our homes and parish,
Who have laid down their lives
In the cause of peace and freedom"
