The new Blackfriars (Southside) station situated at the base of the Blackfriars Railway Bridge, and boasting a glazed concourse, was opened in December 2011. It provides a common entrance to all of the new platforms that now span the River Thames in a “first ever” design. Incoming passengers have direct access to the Bankside and South Bank tourist areas that house The Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern Art Gallery. Passengers can also make direct journeys to Gatwick and Luton airports, St Pancras International Station and London Bridge Station. The new station roof is equipped with 600m2 of PV cells in solar panels that will produce over 1MW of energy.
