If you look at the 1850 and 1910 six-inch maps, this is where the footpath meets Stake Lane. The 1930s edition shows this path and also another taking a short-cut to the path that goes along the top of the Scout. This latter route is the one chosen by whoever drew the definitive map of rights-of-way, but on the ground it does not make sense. The old route is still the one with a stile, a signpost and a new waymark.
