Whitrope Tunnel, south portal
The 1208yd-long Whitrope Tunnel was at the principal summit of the Edinburgh to Carlisle main line, the "Waverley Route", and lay between Hawick and Newcastleton. For many years after the line closed in 1969 the tunnel lay open and there was even a suggestion that it and the adjacent trackbed could be converted into a forest drive. In about 2003 there was a roof fall just inside the south portal and the tunnel was securely fenced with the gates shown here. The southern approach was through a rock cutting faced with bricks, many of which had been loosened by frost. The stack of bricks on the right are those removed from the walls and awaiting resetting.
