NT2840 : Talking sign, Falla Brae

taken 11 years ago, near to Glentress, Scottish Borders, Scotland

We wondered why this wooden seat had a solar panel on top, then pushed one of the buttons on the sign below - this activates a short recording describing life and work for the 'Lumberjills' of the Women's Timber Corps formed in 1942. They took over forestry duties from the men who had gone off to the war, ensuring a supply of timber from UK forests as imports by ship were much restricted in wartime. An imaginative idea by FC Scotland!

See NT2840 : 'Lumberjills' sign for a closeup of the sign itself.
