Water storage tank, Savernake Forest, Wiltshire (2)
In the second world war Savernake Forest was a huge ammunition depot. It stored all types of ordnance from small arms ammunition to bombs and chemical weapons. The risk of fire occurring was a real one and exercises were held to test fire-fighting capabilities. Following one such exercise it was decided that water storage facilities should be provided and a number of tanks like this were installed throughout the forest. This one survived the war and the post-war clear-out. Constructed of reinforced concrete it could hold in excess of 10,000 gallons (45,500 litres).
