NS3977 : A fungus on conifer wood

taken 7 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

A fungus on conifer wood
A fungus on conifer wood
The fungus is growing on the bark of a fallen conifer beside a NS3977 : Path through the woods. It occurred in clusters like the one shown here, these clusters measuring up to centimetre or so across.

It is probably a Nectria species (N. fuckeliana, for example, is quite similar), but there is no certain identification for now.

(An aside: Nectria is a genus of fungi, but is also the name of a genus of starfish. Genus names are unique within any given kingdom, but can occur in different kingdoms if they are governed by a different code of nomenclature. Thousands of similar examples could be given; for just one of them, see NS3976 : Hemlock Water-Dropwort and SE8291 : Wheatear on fencepost.)
