Lindeth Tower, Silverdale
Lindeth Tower, Silverdale
The tower has a slate plaque above the door which states: 'Erected 1842 by H.P. Fleetwood Esq' who owned the house nearby. It has a degree of fame due to it having been a summer retreat for the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell for several years around 1850. Some of her books may well have been written here ('Cranford' was an early form of nearby Carnforth). She is commemorated in Silverdale by the village hall SD4675 : The Gaskell Memorial Hall, Emesgate Lane and nearby Gaskell Close. The tower is a Grade II listed building LinkExternal link and is available as a holiday let LinkExternal link
