This square is a section of the Dunnerdale fells ridge, which is composed of volcanic tuff.
A footpath crosses the ridge from Rawfold Bridge to Croglinhurst - probably an old packhorse track although only marked as a footpath on the 1888 map. At
SD208897 it passes Kitscar Wood, which is an ancient semi-natural woodland and planted ancient woodland acquired by the Woodland Trust from the Forestry Commission in 1990. The majority of the wood comprises oak, sycamore, rowan, hazel and birch together with some planted larch (1950-60's), a few fir and beech trees, and ash in the more flushed areas at the base of the slope. See
www.wt-woods.org.uk/CroglinghurstWood for full details. In 1888 there was a house called Kitscar on the lower side of the footpath, and Old Quarries were indicated in the wood.
Rawfold is a small settlement on the road going up the east side of the Duddon Valley. Rawfold Farm offers bed-and-breakfast. It is in the former Dunnerdale-with Seathwaite CP. On the hill above it, Rawfold Bank, a weather-cock is shown on the 1889 map.
The Lickle Valley is in the former Broughton West CP (both these parishes are now in Duddon CP).
John Tyson was a farmer of 50 acres living at Low Bleansley in 1851. This is now a dairy farm, and also offers bed-and-breakfast.
This is a desk study based on information from the internet, the OS 1:2500 map of 1888 and the OS 1:25000 map of 2001. Further information, and of course photographs, would be very welcome.
