SH5948 : Name sign, Tanronnen Inn, Beddgelert

taken 12 years ago, near to Beddgelert, Gwynedd, Wales

Name sign, Tanronnen Inn, Beddgelert
Name sign, Tanronnen Inn, Beddgelert
The sign shows Tan-yr-onen, a variant of Tanronnen, Welsh for under the ash tree.
Depicted is the mythical dog Gelert defending the infant child of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd from an attack by a large wolf. There is no historical evidence for the existence of Gelert and the romantic explanation of the village's name, literally Gelert's grave. The village is probably named after an early Christian missionary and leader named Celert who settled here in the early 8th century.
