Pancras Road with Great Northern Hotel and St Pancras station. 1994
At the time of this photograph, the area between Kings Cross and St Pancras stations was occupied by the curving Great Northern Hotel, built by the Great Northern Railway company as an adjunct to Kings Cross. Subsequently the area has been transformed by the coming of the Channel Tunnel rail link: St Pancras station in the background has been extended to take longer trains, and at the time of writing (2012) the area between the stations has largely become a pedestrian concourse linking the new departures concourse of Kings Cross with the northern entrance to St Pancras.
Beyond the north end of the station stand the gas holders whose positioning at the end of the station made them a landmark to travellers but also put them full in the path of the proposed Channel Tunnel link.
