Cultivation traces at Red Brae
Cultivation traces at Red Brae
For the main description, see NS4481 : Cultivation traces at Red Brae. As noted there, there are three areas at Red Brae where cultivation marks are particularly visible. The one shown in the present photograph is centred on NS44538120, and contains ridges running N-S, covered in darker vegetation than their surroundings.

This is a view along some of those ridges; for views of them from other angles, see NS4481 : Cultivation traces at Red Brae and NS4481 : Cultivation traces at Red Brae. For an index to pictures of the other two areas, see the main description (link given above).

The lines of darker and lighter vegetation are evidence that agriculture was carried on long ago on what now appears, superficially, to be barren moorland.

Furrows here, spaced about 5.5 metres apart, appear to be remnants of what was once a larger area under cultivation. The presence of such traces, and of the nearby remains of an enclosure – Link – suggest that there was, long ago, a farmstead at Red Brae.
