The new boardwalk, Thursley National Nature Reserve (3)
I hadn't been to Thursley for a while, and this was the first time I'd walked across the bog along this new boardwalk. You don't normally think about a boardwalk in terms of 'design', but a degree of imagination went into the construction of this one. Here the boardwalk 'flows' round the trees, as if they were islands in a river.
By the time I took this shot the sun had dropped below the trees behind me, and a chilly afternoon was turning bitterly cold. I hurried back towards the road, at times slithering along the planking on a film of ice. The temperature seemed to drop a few degrees in a few minutes, and - although it was almost windless - I was glad to reach the shelter of the pinewoods, where milder air was trapped beneath the canopy.
