The back of the Market House Museum, from West Street
With the Esplanade visible beyond. The main door of the (highly-recommended) small museum is at the other end of the building. In the 1960's, the lower floor was occupied by Gliddon's - a wonderful paraffin-scented old-style hardware store. Gliddon's was then entered by a side door on Market Street, which is no longer used. Upstairs is the Holy Cross Chapel, which is a downtown weekday presence/drop-in centre for Watchet's rather distant St. Decuman's church (1km.inland, on top of a hill overlooking the town). The little door on the ground floor was originally the Court Leet Lockup, which the museum has now rigged it up as a outside exhibit - complete with a (mannikin) drunken sailor inmate. The side alley gives front-door access to some pretty colour-washed houses that have backs overlooking the harbour. The original hardware shop windows have been converted into external display spaces for the museum.
