Derby - Phoenix Street
The former "Gelsthorpe House" is practically the last building standing on Phoenix Street. According to the stone-chiselled legend on the sandstone plaque - beneath what remains of an exterior light fitting - these were the business premises of "John Gelsthorpe : Dealer in Horses" (a slaughterman ?). The property and its yard are now in use by two separate Army Cadet groups. The car parked round the corner is in Derwent Street. Immediately opposite these barracks are several small un-asphalted car parking lots. During the 19th century this small area, including Derwent Street and Exeter Street, was known as Canary Island because the River Derwent and the Derby Canal, together with a number of wharfs and dry docks rendered it a small island that was linked to the surrounding parts of the town by bridges.
