Shonegawna Castle: Fairy Fort
Shonegawna Castle: Fairy Fort
This wooded area within the perimeter of the castle walls is known locally as the Fairy Fort and is avoided by some in case the Fairies are offended by their presence.

Shonegawna Castle (Siadhan na Gamhna-the Fairy Mound of the Calves)

It possibly started out as a crannog in ancient times and probably taken over by the Normans (probably Jordans) in the 12/13 century as it seems to have been converted into a motte and bailey. This would have been before the Jordans got around to building nearby Ballylahan Castle.
