Greyfriars Undercroft
Inside the grade 1 listed Greyfriars Link a nine by two bay vaulted undercroft of c1230. The only surviving building of the Franciscan Friary, tucked away between the Library and St.Swithin's church. Thought to be the infirmary of the Greyfriars, it is one of the earliest surviving Franciscan Friary churches in Europe and the oldest friary building in England. Following its dissolution in 1538 it had numerous uses, largely as a school, until its closure in 1900. It was restored 1905-7 and served as the City and County museum from 1907 to 2004.
It has been un-used for the last eight years, though is now open again as Mistaken Presence LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) arts and exhibition space, seen here with an exhibition called 'Crating' LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) crating.html
