Swanage Pier
Looking along Swanage's restored Victorian Pier from Prince Albert Gardens.

The original Swanage Pier was constructed in 1859/60 for the Swanage Pier and Tramway Company and opened by John Mowlem. The Pier was built primarily for shipping stone. Horses were used to pull carts along the narrow gauge tramway which ran along the Pier and seafront.

When regular steamer services carrying day-trippers between Swanage and nearby towns of Poole and Bournemouth were started in 1874 it became apparent that a new, longer, pier needed to be built primarily for use by the passenger steamers.

Construction on the new pier began in 1895, and the pier was officially opened to traffic in 1897. In 1940 the landward end of the Pier was blown up as an anti-invasion precaution. Following the war, steamer traffic was temporarily revived in 1948 but steamer services discontinued in 1966 and the pleasure pier began to fall into disrepair. After a failed attempt to restore the pier by a development firm in 1986, Swanage Pier Trust took over ownership of the pier in 1993. The restored pleasure pier is open to the public with some small scale ferry services running mainly to Poole Quay. The pier also hosts a successful diving school and is visited annually by historic steamers including the Waverley paddle steamer and the MV Balmoral.

The pier is a Grade II listed building.

The older original pier had already declined along with the stone industry it served some years earlier. Today all that remains of the old pier are some of the timber piles.
