Opened in 1850 by the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway, it has expanded and contracted over the years. View west. The south train shed on the left opened in 1890. The car park on the right behind the railings used to be bay platforms to serve many suburban stations now served by the Tyne & Wear Metro.
