Looking upstream towards the Metrolink bridge at Warth. The river has been swollen by recent heavy rainfall and is considerably higher (and wider) than normal, see SD7909 : River Irwell, the weir at Warth Mills for a comparison with the more usual river level.

The River Irwell rises on the Rossendale hills north of Bacup and flows south for 39 miles before joining the River Mersey west of Manchester. It was a very important river in the development of industry, during the Industrial revolution, in Lancashire.
