Coastal Defences, Plymouth Sound
Coastal Defences, Plymouth Sound
This clearly shows the coastal defences protecting shipping in Plymouth South. Started in 1812 with the Breakwater, gun batteries were added in the mid 1800s with Bovisand Fort (1861), the Breakwater Fort (1861) and Picklecombe Fort (1864). These were supplemented by a battery on Drake Island (not visible in this photograph as it is further up the Sound towards Plymouth).

Bovisand Fort is now a training centre for divers with the water around the Breakwater Fort used for deep water diving training. Fort Picklecombe has been converted to luxury apartments. The Breakwater continues to provide shelter for shipping entering the Sound.
