This 268-bedroomed prestigious, luxury hotel was built for Richard D'Oyly Carte with profits made from his Gilbert and Sullivan operas. It opened in 1889 with electric lighting throughout the hotel, electric lifts and en-suite bathrooms. Carte employed CÚsar Ritz as its manager and the French chef Auguste Escoffier who between them established an unprecedented standard of quality in hotel service, entertainment and elegant dining that attracted royalty, plus other wealthy guests and diners.
