Barbon Close is directly opposite The Hospital for Sick Children. Apart from the converted Mission Church ("1876") halfway down the mews, a wall sign at its entrance - reading "G. Bailey and Sons, Horse and Motor Contractors" - highlights the former existence of stables and garage facilities at its closed end. Nicholas Barebon (c. 1640-98), who traded as Nicholas Barbon, was an English physician, property developer and financial speculator. He gained a Doctor of Medicine qualification from the University of Utrecht in 1661 and three years later became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London. However, he turned from the medical profession to the building once this trade assumed increased importance after the Great Fire of London, gaining great wealth and a degree of notoriety on account of his some of his dubious behaviour.
